Did anyone else see Angelina Jolie’s acceptance speech at the Nickelodeon Kids Choice Awards a few months back?
I for one am still thinking about it – it inspired me.
Winning the Best Villian award for her role as Maleficent, her message to the young audience was simple: ‘different is good’.
“I want to say when I was little, like Maleficent, I was told that I was different, and I felt out of place, and too loud, too full of fire, never good at sitting still, never good at fitting in.
“And then one day I realised something, something I hope you all realise. Different is good.
“When someone tells you that you are different, smile and hold your head up and be proud,” she said.
Celebrating our differences
Our differences are what make life interesting, our experiences diverse and unique. So teaching our kids to celebrate their differences is so important.
One way for kids to understand themselves, and not to fall into who they think they need to be, is to encourage them to meditate. Meditation can give them the safe space they need to find their own way.
Until next time, different is definitely good!
